I am not now religious. I think I may may have been at an early age. I remember the images of of Jesus on the walls of St. Andrews parish Church where I attended Sunday school as a boy. One image in particular captured my imagination and has stayed with me throughout this mortal existence. Jesus is depicted saying : I will be always be with you until the end of time. However, I moved from the conditioning/brainwashing and irrationality of religion at an early age. I am not one for criticizing any one for being religious if his religious beliefs give him comfort and hope in coping in this mortal existence However, I just want to say this: All religions are organized. They instil fear and guilt. Instead of of being the great uniter of humankind and the world, they are the great divider of humankind and the world. To quote Sri Aurobindo: This would not have been so if religions were the true and sufficient guide of the whole of human life. True religion is spiritual religion, it is a seeking after the creative Spirit, the opening of the deepest life of the soul to the indwelling Godhead, the eternal Omnipresence. Omnipresence means the presence of the Creator everywhere, or always present. Spirituality is a progressive awakening to the inner reality of our being, to a spirit, self, soul which is other than our mind, life and body. It is an entering into contact and union with the greater Reality beyond, which pervades the universe and dwells in us all. In other words we have to become Gnostic Beings - Gnostic means knowledge of the Creative Spirit through direct, personal spiritual experience. Contact/union with the the Creative spirit/spirits cannot be achieved by throwing ones hands in the air and rolling about on the floor as some religious groups are wont to do. It cannot be achieved by calling in some expensively suited con man who claims he has direct contact with the Creative Spirit/Spirits. Neither can it be achieved by going to Church every Sunday, dressed in ones finest, singing lustily and then for the rest of the week bad talking ones neighbour. Even politicians go to church occasionally and sing lustily - it is a wonder the church does not collapse on them and bury them beneath the rubble. Contact and union cannot be achieved by lying prostrate and praying a hundred times a day whilst facing whatever point of the compass. It also cannot be achieved by worshipping as God a calf that was born with three eyes. The religions of the world do contain some truth. But this truth has been manipulated to suit an agenda. True religions are different roads converging upon the same point. So what does it matter if we take different roads so long as we achieve contact/union with the the Creative spirit/spirits. Religions will be confined to the dustbins of history in this new age we have just entered.
