I am not quite sure where to start with this post .. So I shall - TopicsExpress

I am not quite sure where to start with this post .. So I shall just start and hope it makes some sense. Over the last few days all eyes ears and hearts have been following the story of the special baby with Down Syndrome living in Thailand with the surrogate mother after being left behind by the biological parents who collected the other twin without DS ... While I do not stand in public judgement of the biological parents although believe me I have very strong thoughts !!! And my heart crumbles at the thought of the beautiful child being left like an unwanted puppy... But I also look past this to the bigger picture. Given the obvious heartache we are living with after losing our gorgeous son Blake I cannot help but wonder how and why on earth little Gammys heart issues were picked up while here in Australia our own child fell through the cracks ! We were told for 13 months that Blakes heart was fine .. Clearly it was not !!! Then a day before we were transferred to Melbourne RCH his first echocardiogram was performed and we were again assured he had no heart issues ( information that was also given to RCH in his records) The truth is that Blake had 2 holes in his heart from birth... Dont get me wrong Im very pleased Gammys heart issues have been identified... But it truly makes me question how and why nothing and I mean nothing was ever picked up with Blake through pregnancy and birth !!! Again this shows the definite need for more heart testing on every newborn (pulse oximeter) and without a doubt a proper paediatric cardiologist review on every child born with DS regardless of location !!! I also cannot help but feel so incredibly sad for the thousands of couples trying oh so desperately to have a child of their own. Incidents like this are just crushing !!! I know this because we would be over the moon to be blessed with another child !!! I do not know the legalities on this particular case and whether I agree or disagree with this practice through other countries is totally irrelevant.. but I do appreciate that this will have a knock on effect and many people will have just lost their chance to welcome a child into their own family... There are also the obvious feelings of anger and anguish being expressed through parents and relatives with a family member with DS.. To be blunt its insulting !!! Its insulting to know that a child with extra chromosomes ( like your own that you love and adore) has been coldly rejected ! The Community spirit shared by families of a person with DS runs very deep, we are all very supportive of each other, yes a mix of personalities that are not always totally in agreement .. But .. We always strive for the best for the children and freely share advice and tips !!! So this has totally rocked the world of DS ... So what do we do ?? What can we do ??? Besides the obvious of hoping that little Gammy comes through all of this with a long, happy and very loved life ! I am hoping we can learn from this terribly sad happening... I hope that while so many people are up in arms about the injustice done to this beautiful child they will think very strongly about the injustice of discriminating against any child with special needs which sadly occurs regularly !!! Every child deserves the right to life, to be accepted, to grow and thrive, to give to society !!! My hope is that people will stop and reassess their own thoughts and gain a greater understanding that having a child with DS is amazing, just the same as any child !! I hope that we can continue to break down the old fashioned out dated thinking about living with DS .. Lets take the blinkers off and really see how amazing, loving and capable these people truly are !!! Wouldnt it be wonderful if a huge percentage of society now changed their thoughts on Down Syndrome overall to a more positive view and better understanding !!! Please join with us in doing this .... And we truly wish this precious child all the very best xxx
