I am not that interested in the moldy old argument about PC, but - TopicsExpress

I am not that interested in the moldy old argument about PC, but am interested in the topic of shock effects in the theatre. One thinks immediately of certain playwrights like Mamet, or the use of profanity and nudity. Or Shakespeares play Titus Andronicus. What still shocks? Is theatre different than movies and TV shows in terms of what is shocking? Are midwesterners and southerners more like to object to these shock effects than NYers? Is there such a thing as an effective, artfully placed shock effect? Do you use them? Examples? In a world like ours, billions of people, and hundreds of thousands of writers (at least), how does someone get heard? Does it involve shock effects? Does a shock effect need to be surrounded in a sense, carefully placed in some sort of context? Are certain writers expected and encouraged to produce them, while others are wise to avoid them or go unproduced?
