I am outraged that this guy can even say such a thing and get off so lightly, is there no justice in the UAE ? please read Driver denies responsibility in pedestrian’s death Defendant seeks to reduce two-month jail term in fatal hit-and-run accident By Bassam Za’za’, Legal and Court CorrespondentPublished: 13:48 March 7, 2014Gulf News Dubai: A driver admitted in court on Thursday that he drove his car under the influence of liquor but denied being responsible for the death of a pedestrian in November. “It is true that I drove my vehicle under the influence of liquor … but the accident was not my mistake,” the 31-year-old Brazilian man, B.T., told the Dubai Appeal Court. The defendant showed up in court where he entered his plea and sought to reduce his two-month jail term. In February, the Dubai Misdemeanours Traffic Court jailed B.T. for two months and suspended his driving licence for six months. Prosecutors appealed the primary ruling and are seeking to stiffen the two-month sentence against the defendant, who was drunk when he mowed down the British pedestrian and killed him. B.T. was found guilty of committing the hit-and-run accident when he mowed down 29-year-old G.M. and killed him while the latter was crossing Al Sufouh Street towards the Dubai Marina Bridge. Records said the defendant fled the accident scene and went directly to his workplace, from where he picked up his passport then headed out immediately to Dubai International Airport. He was arrested at the airport’s Dubai Duty Free before he boarded a Beirut-bound plane at 4.20am on November 24. “Did you run away from the accident scene and never stopped?” presiding judge Aysar Fouad asked the defendant through a court translator. “Yes, I did not stop,” replied the defendant. The judge Fouad adjourned the case until B.T.’s lawyer Rashid Tahlak presents his written defence on March 20. According to the primary judgement, the court decided that the Briton had a shared responsibility in his own death and ordered B.T. to pay Dh150,000 his share of the blood money [amounting to Dh200,000] to the Briton’s family. The Brazilian also reasoned he did not cause the Briton’s death. Prosecutors have asked for tougher punishment considering the aggravating factors that B.T. was drunk when he hit the victim. A Lebanese eyewitness said the defendant did not apply his brakes when he ran over the Briton and continued driving without stopping. The Lebanese provided the police with the car description and plate number, court records show. The Briton crossed from an undesignated spot and had reached the second lane when the car knocked him over.
