I am perplexed as to why certain breeds of choral singer treat John Rutters music with contempt. Every composer has good days and bad days and likewise, most composers turn out trash as well as real gems during the course of their career. Sadly, there are some choral singers who seem to enjoy slagging of Rutters music because they either lack the musical intelligence to be able to distinguish between what is good and what is bad or because they seem to think that it is the done thing to poo poo Rutters music. Several of Rutters recent pieces are absolutely marvellous. The amount of copies sold as well as the vast numbers of his recordings sold prove that he is a popular composer! Sadly, there is a lot of musical snobbery in the world of choral music. The anti Rutter brigade seem now to be applying similar thought to other composers who write in a similar sort of style, but maintaining their own identity. Personally, my own tastes are quite eclectic. I am equally at home with early music and baroque as I am with modern composers such as Will Todd, Bob Chilcott, Eric Whitacre and Philip Stopford.
