I am pleased to announce that a bill I introduced, the DHS Interoperable Communications Act, unanimously passed through the Committee on Homeland Security. The bill will improve emergency communications capabilities for our first responders ensuring that they can respond better during times of disaster. This will not only help our first responders, but it will save lives. A recent study found that out of 480 first responders, ONLY 1 could get on a common radio channel to communicate with other emergency personnel. This is simply unacceptable. In the 21st Century, it is critical that all of our first responders -- no matter how large a city or town they come from -- be able to communicate with one another.
