I am pleased to announce the selection of Mr. James Burnett as Project Leader for the new 9-refuge North Florida National Wildlife Refuge Complex. This Complex will unify our national wildlife refuges along Florida’s “Big Bend” or “Nature Coast,” which is one of the largest, undeveloped, mostly privately-held coastal areas in the nation. We are fortunate to have Mr. Burnett’s strong leadership to forge new partnerships on the landscape while restoring and managing refuges through fire management, forestry, invasive exotics removal, and visitor services and outreach. Refuge Supervisor Elizabeth Souheaver noted that, “Though we will see a net reduction in staff as a result of this combination of stations as part of workforce planning, I remain encouraged about the future knowing we have James and other great managers leading talented staffs in this important geography. Mr. Burnett possesses significant and highly successful leadership skills and experience with hallmark traits of integrity and sound decision making.” Currently the Project Leader for St. Marks and St. Vincent NWRs, Mr. Burnett has a high degree of technical knowledge with a Master’s Degree in Wildlife Management and more than 25 years of on-the-ground management on several field stations in fire management and refuge management roles. Mr. Burnett also has diverse Service experience in different roles and programs, having served at the Regional level as a Deputy Refuge Supervisor and then Regional Private Lands Coordinator. Recently he served on a national Conserving the Future: Wildlife Refuge and the Next Generation team developing strategic growth policy for the National Wildlife Refuge System. Please join me in congratulating James Burnett. David Viker, Chief, Southeast Region National Wildlife Refuge System, Fish and Wildlife Service
