I am probably going to offend some people with this post and if I do I wont apologize, if the shoe fits wear it. As a volunteer at the shelter, I have heard every excuse imaginable for taking an animal to the shelter- cant afford it, dont have time, doesnt get along with my other dog(which they have lived with for several years), too energetic and chews (they are puppies) doesnt match my furniture anymore, got too big. But the real heartbreaker is the senior ones, what kind of person takes a senior dog/cat to a shelter or gets rid of them in their old age. Pets are a responsibility, commitment, and a privilege. There are organizations to help with vet bills, the shelter will give you food, and there are low cost vaccines. Your children grow up and make their own lives, friends grow apart, and spouses leave but a dog loves you to their dying breath. They too have hearts and they get broken when they are abandoned and betrayed. I am fortunate enough that I work with an amazing shelter who has a great staff and awesome volunteers. We all try to give them as much love as we can but we all know that most ultimately will go to the rainbow bridge, after all they are old. The staff has to make that heartbreaking decision and at the end of the day they are the ones mourning your pet. So PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE think about the long term before you get a pet. There are SEVERAL senior dogs at Carteret County Humane Society that need homes if you want to open your heart to an amazing friend/unconditional love.
