I am probably going to upset a bunch of people by posting this. So I apologize in advance. These are just one persons opinions about a very confusing subject. Believe whatever you like, but think about it first. There is a lot of discussion about creation versus evolution these days, especially after the much touted debate between Ken Ham and Bill Nye. Personally, I didnt think either one of them was particularly convincing. They were polite to each other, but neither of them seemed to have compelling arguments, that left the audience with the feeling that the issues had been settled, once and for all. Like many political debates, people had their minds made up before hand; and not too many minds were changed by the lackluster performances of the two debaters. The most fundamental question, in my mind, is, where did all of this stuff come from? Even if we were to concede that there was a big bang, at some point in past, that merely begs the question of where the compressed matter came from and what caused it to become compressed and then explode. Its like postulating that aliens terraformed the earth and created life here. If that were true, where did the aliens come from and how did the material universe come to be here in the first place? These sorts of theories dont really offer any real answers. They only raise more questions that have no answers and beg the original question, by postulating some unprovable hypothesis in the distant past. Assuming that we can put aside the debate about where the matter came from and what caused it to come into the state that we now find it, we are still left with the nagging question about how life began on this planet. The theory of evolution postulates that somehow, in the distant past, all the right chemicals came together and that somehow a simple one-celled organism was formed; and from that one-celled organism, over billions of years of evolution, all of the plants and animals were formed. The problems with this theory are many. I am no scientist. However, I know that life doesnt happen by accident, no matter how long you wait. The second law of thermodynamics, seems to imply that things tend toward disorder. This can be clearly seen in the way things wear out, break, decay, etc. How then are we to believe that matter organized itself, by chance, into complex living organisms? Assuming we could put aside the questions about how life began, the next question is how does a one-celled organism evolve into all the varieties of plant and animal life that we see in the world? We have ample evidence of evolution within species, but we do not see the same evidence of one species evolving into another. There are no transitional forms, the so-called missing links, in the fossil records. There is no hard evidence to support the theory of evolution. Without fossil evidence to support it, the theory of evolution simply isnt scientific. It seems much simpler and more sensible to believe that someone or something created the matter that makes up the universe, as we know it, and created the life that we see around us. Postulating aliens bringing life to our planet, simply begs the question; because we then have to wonder where the aliens came from; or if an asteroid hit the earth and had life on it, then we have to wonder where did that life come from. We cant just keep begging the fundamental question of where life came from. Everything has to have a first cause. Postulating a creator seems the simplest and most sensible solution to this enigma. Obviously, there is no way to prove the existence of such a being; but, at least, I admit that it something that I take on faith. Furthermore, it is the only explanation that makes sense to me. The other nagging question is about the age of the universe. Many creationists insist on a young earth, somewhere between 6,000 and 10,000 years old. I have read books and watched videos on the subject; and to be honest, I dont know what to believe. There are good arguments on both sides. So whether the earth is 10 thousand years old or 10 billion years old, I cannot say for sure. Again, I am not a scientist. A great deal of this stuff goes right over my head. However, assuming, for a moment, that there was a God who created the world 10,000 years ago, why would he create it as though it were billions of years old, with light waves coming from distant stars, which didnt exist when the light seemed to have originated. It just doesnt make any sense. On this point, I lean toward accepting the old earth position, but neither position seem to be compelling to me. So, I am going to keep an open mind on this question.
