I am proud of my fellow Hong Kongers for finally breaking a generational and cultural taboo of keeping their mouths shut. Instead, the protesters from all generations have taken up the baton left from Tianamen Square and are coming out in full force and creating history. Hong Kong you have made me proud today to call you home. I just pray that this works, and that universal suffrage and true democracy can become a reality. Although I dont think this will actually happen unless political reforms happen at the highest levels. As some have already suggested, mainland is watching, and if democracy happens in HK, then mainlanders will muster up courage and seek it themselves. Then the communists would lose their power. But as weve witnessed in the fall of USSR, the peaceful unraveling cant happen unless theres true will from the top. You cant change communism from the bottom up, Im afraid. Marx didnt foresee that communism would eventually create the most powerful top down structures the world has ever seen...especially when true socialism was supposed to mean the peasants would hold true power.
