I am proud to recognize the recent efforts of the Housing Authority of the City of Austin (HACA) and Google Fiber to close the digital divide and create a more digitally inclusive city. Yesterday, HACA launched a program called Unlocking the Connection, an initiative to help provide Internet services to people living in public housing. Google Fiber is investing in this project to make digital inclusion a citywide priority by providing accessible and affordable Internet options. They will be providing free Internet to HACA properties located in areas serviced by Google Fiber. The goal is to help everyone have access to basic Internet needs. Additionally, corporate and community organizations around the city are investing resources to provide training and devices to all HACA residents. Special thanks to Austin Community College, which has agreed to donate computers to all HACA households. Unlocking the Connection is an effort to make the City of Austin more connected. These partners have worked hard in pursuing the goal of digital inclusion, and will continue to do so. We look forward to seeing the success of these initiatives.
