I am reading a very interesting book right now: Quiet...the Power of Introverts in a World That Cant Stop Talking by Susan Cane. Sometimes I become discouraged and frustrated with collaboration as if it is the answer to every problem in education. I love this book because it researches and finds that collaboration can sometimes kill creativity. My favorite chapter is The Rise of the New Groupthink and the Power of Working Alone. I dont mind having meetings where people come together with a plan and share things that have worked...but to throw everyone in a room every week and make them share and plan and think together drives me out of my mind. I do my best thinking and creating when I am by myself. Its not that I dont want to share...its just that I need to have quiet to figure things out. I need some alone time...and education doesnt allow that for teachers. We live in a very loud world. I think thats why I love reading and studying and even writing dissertations...I am alone with my own thoughts and I am responsible for my own writing. Some of the most amazing writers and artists are those people who just want to be alone without all of the voices and distractions in order to finish a project. Tell me what you think AFTER I am finished.... not DURING my creative endeavor. Our culture made a virtue of living only as extroverts. We discouraged the inner journey, the quest for center.
