I am really starting to hate Meet the Press. This morning they played a joking clip of Mel Brooks saying he was respectful enough to wait for Hitler to be dead before making the Producers. Chuck Todd then went on to seriously intone, How about that? First of all, only someone with no sense of humor would miss that this was a joke, not a political position. Secondly, a few key clicks on the internet machine would have turned up this. Not only did Chaplin mock Hitler and fascists, he also went on a pinko rant, and no one impugned him for exercising his right to express his art, satire, freely or admonish him for any Nazis whose feeling might get hurt. We may not know if NK is really at fault, but films like Dr, Strangelove and Great dictator should be championed and not have their future creators discouraged.
