Yes, some do close on time..but, to most of them, you are only a number and they dont really care about you personally. You can reach a local lender by email, phone, fax & face-to-face. Face-to-face is a big deal. Many times a local lender can match the interest rate. If they cannot match it, the personal touch will most likely be better anyway.
