I am scared that we are trying to be so civilized and so humane that we will end up getting our heads chopped off on the streets. I have to admit that I would be ok not knowing what secret bad things the CIA has to do to keep us safe. Long ago I stopped trying to figure out how I felt about the killing in war, assassination plots or secret things the CIA has always done because I realized impossible ethical questions arose from these things. It my head spin! War and killing is in itself a mind bender. There are big questions about what is ok for the greater good and I trust in the overall good essence of the USA to discern the answers. I was in therapy and asked my counselor how to cope with the idea that someone might deceive me or do some wrong to me and he explained that we never really know a person in totality and that we have to decide wether we trust in the overall good essence of that person. The same could apply to a country however in that comparison we would have to accept as part of its essence that we know going into our relationship that there are secrets we might disapprove of and that we werent told for our own good. Once, I did this little quiz that was to see if you are a sociopath and one of the questions was about if a train was coming and all 50 people on board would die unless you pushed one person off, would you do it? I imagine that there would have to be a lot of detached, sociopathic people working in a secret program like the CIA, who are able to reason and cope with the impossible ethical positions that arise in war and keeping peace. But I think we would have had many, many more 911s if we were without them! I would prefer that we not know what is happening to keep us safe. We will regret it if we keep pressing for the terrorists rights. But most of us cant cope with our moral dilemma so lets keep our heads in the sand and be grateful there are some conscientious sociopaths working on our side!
