I am sitting at the airport in Chicago after six weeks of amazing travels that took me to Uganda, Rwanda, Ethiopia, Italy, Germany, and New York. It turns out that it sometimes takes longer to travel from New York to Springfield than it does from Addis Abeba to Germany. The plane that is supposed to take us to Missouri is not coming in. Four hours delay. On Sunday I will talk and preach at Springfield Community Christian Church. The lecture this and next week will be about: Do we have an "original text" of the Christian Bible? There is a strong tradition within the Christian movement that insists that every word of the Bible is inspired, and most denominations believe in the authority of Scripture. But what do they mean? David Trobisch will talk about the challenges that scholars face as they pursue their quest for the "original" text of the Bible. Some of the questions he will touch are: Is it what the authors wanted to say? Is it the first edition of the Christian Bible? Or is it the latest edition?
