I am so completely offended by this I can hardly contain myself. As a former public school teacher Ive always known that textbook publishers focus their content decisions on what the states that buy the most textbook want for their children. This means that states like Texas are a heavy, heavy influence on the content offered in textbooks. As these states become more and more radicalized so does the content of things like your childs Social Studies textbook. The public has no chance of changing this practice as it is based on business principles rather than a desire to provide students with a balanced view of historical events. What the public can do, and indeed must do is to ask their school district not to purchase these textbooks. Ask them instead to follow the states adopted or districts adopted curriculum by utilizing the Primary source materials available in abundance on the Internet. Yes, this will take more time and effort, but will produce a student who is able to read, discern, and think for themselves rather than little robot sheep who only spout propaganda and think it fact. Sometimes people are not aware that curriculum and textbooks are two different things. The curriculum is the ideas and events to b e covered and the scope of t hat coverage. A textbook is only a source to be used to find that information. When textbooks are being this badly mangled it is time to stop using these easily skewed sources and opt for Primary sources that tell it from the view of the participants on both sides of an issue or event . If you really want educated citizens do this.
