I am so excited to go see Max and all the other Westport Workshop kids give their invention presentations today at Long Lots. He has been working hard at researching and creating his invention and presentation all on his own, and I am so proud of him. I just read his intro for the first time and with his permission, wanted to share it with all of you. GOT A DOG AND GOT THIS???? Well, I can help you. Hello, I am Max Rudin and I just got husky puppy a few weeks ago. Anne, is sooooo cute but she chews up a lot of our shoes. She sometimes chews other things, but 90% of the time she likes to chew shoes. So when we had to come up with an invention that solves a problem, I decided that I should come up with a solution to the problem I’m having at home. I researched smells and tastes that dogs don’t like but were safe for them and also had to be a scent that we would like. They dislike the smell of: hot chile pepper, lemon, orange, lime and bitter apples. So I thought that these smells might stop my dog from chewing our shoes and would not hurt her. I took a lemon and put it in front of Anne’s nose. Dogs have a very strong sense of smell. She did not like the smell of the lemon. She kept darting her head back and forth away from the lemon. So then I thought how do I get these scents on the shoes? I decided to make lemon juice and mix it with water and then put the liquid in a spray bottle. Next, I sprayed it on one of my shoes and I put it right in front of my dog’s mouth. She DID NOT bother to chew up that shoe!!! This was great to see. I needed a name for this spray. I came up with a few different ones but then chose CHEW AWAY DOG SPRAY because for one it rhymes and it also describes what it does. There are sprays that you can buy in the store that prevent dogs from chewing but this is what is different about CHEW AWAY DOG SPRAY. You can make it in your house so you know exactly what your dog is getting. If you use half a lemon for cooking, the other half can be used for the spray. If you eat an orange, you can use the peel for the spray too. So you are using all of the fruit and saving money too!! I liked finding a solution to a problem we were having at home. I think many people have the same problem and I think a healthy and money saving spray is the way to go.
