I am so glad to watch the Super Size Me documentary in 2013 (10 years after I first saw it) and be on the side of health. I have consistently been affected by this documentary since I saw it and truly believe that feeding my body healthy foods is the healthiest thing I can do throughout my entire life. Approximately 7 months ago I gave up McDonalds for good. Approximately 4 months ago I gave up refined sugar soda for good. And approximately 1.5 months ago I gave up meat, dairy and all animal derived food products for good. I am 100% certain that I was once a food addict. Believe me when I say that feeding your body high fat, highly processed and refined food weighs you down in more ways than physical pounds. There was a time in my life when depression was an inevitable state. There was a time in my life when I would eat to the point of illness because I had to eat even if I didnt want to because my brain was wired to crave foods that I dont even consider food at all. Food should nourish your body. I honestly do not see anything on a McDonalds menu that resembles nourishment. People become physically addicted to this food. It is an addiction that goes beyond taste but also comfort and chemical interaction within ones body. Please also believe me when I say that being overweight is not an easy way to live. I had constant shame against my body. I would want to change my eating habits but would quickly give up and give in. I honestly view my journey to healthy eating as a road to recovery. It has been a horrible internal battle to give up the foods that I once thought I wanted but knew were doing nothing good for my body and were in fact hurting it. Since making this shift in my life I have more energy; substantially less frequent feelings of depression; I find joy in whole foods and look forward to eating them everyday. I make 90% of my meals with food I buy in a grocery store and when that does not seem like a feasible option I make a healthier choice when eating take-out. Deciding not to eat McDonalds was not just about avoiding one fast food restaurant; it was also a symbol for leaving food that hurt my body behind me. I limit foods that are processed (more than me cooking them from fresh ingredients) to approximately 25% of my overall diet (and I see room for improvement). I make as many food swaps as I can and over time it is getting easier. Instead of refined white sugar in my tea or coffee or at-home baking I use raw sugar, organic cane sugar or agave nectar. The fewer ingredients an item contains makes it more appealing for me to eat- and as it should be. I have let go of so much excess weight that was hindering me from being the person I see within myself. And with 20 pounds down I know I am getting closer everyday.
