I am so happy to see some news coverage of Topical Steroid Withdrawal! https://youtube/watch?v=t-Swc7jop50 This link is to a piece done in Australia. Kudos to the folks that were willing to share their very personal stories and pictures on nationwide television. As for the Dermatologists.... why is it that so many are willing to acknowledge that TSW can exist, but are so reluctant to admit that there wasnt enough research and that it is much more prevalent than they originally thought. Rare does not equal impossible. There are 3000ish folks in the support groups and forums, and this is something that each and every one of us had to research and figure out on our own. Imagine if those suffering at this very moment had reliable and available information at their fingertips... I have a feeling it would be an astronomically higher number. He also says that it is physically impossible to become addicted to topical steroids. In the words of one of my former nursing school instructors: Regarding topical use: anything put into the skin is absorbed, including steroids. The medical community is well aware of the scary side effects of steroids. Google Prednisone withdrawal and have a field day: medicinenet/steroid_withdrawal/article.htm This little jewel of a statement made me tad bit angry. It isnt heroin. Funny thing. I work with opiate addicts day in and day out. Withdrawal symptoms heroin users experience: intense cravings, insomnia, shakes, hot/cold flashes, nausea and vomiting, diarrhea, skin crawling, depression, anxiety, muscle cramps and spasms. Symptoms of people in topical steroid withdrawal: all of the above for me with the exception of cravings (luckily even seeing a tube of topical steroids makes me want to barf now), along with burning and horrendously scary looking rashes that itch as if you landed in a swarm of fire ants. Oh, and TSW can last for YEARS. I am in no way saying that heroin withdrawal is easy or not as bad as TSW. I am illustrating that they are BOTH physical addictions. As far as blaming it on a Psychological predisposition to fear of stopping using topical steroids, tell that to the children that arent even old enough to walk or talk. Please visit Itsan.org for more infomation as well as personal stories and pictures of TSW warriors. I am providing a link to my own blog, (those of you that are my friends have been inundated with blog updates) because I have decided to make this post public (which I have never done for anything else, this is THAT important to me). https://unzipmyskinplease.wordpress/ Please feel to share or forward to anyone you feel would be interested.
