I am so looking forward to Our Common Ground with Janiice Graham program tonight, featuring Dr. Joyce Ladner. I first became aware of Dr. Ladners work as an undergraduate student at Bennett College. Although I was not a social work major, a former Professor and Director of the Social Work Dept the late Dr. Will Scott gave to me the book, The Death of White Sociology to read (I still have it today). After reading this book, I developed an interest and curiosity in books, particularly from an insider perspective, that examined the conditions, experiences of African Americans and Black family life. I surely was not interested in pathology. If one watches television or reads some books/studies that examine the lives and experiences of African Americans, you may struggle to find yourself or even your experiences reflected back to you. My lived experiences in a Black nuclear and extended Black family conveyed something other than pathology, but I wanted to read about it. I sought an oppositional knowledge. The Dealth of White Sociology was that oppositional knowledge for me.
