I am taking a lot of flak for asking why it should be hard for a 25 yr old to be a Chief of Staff of a political office....I have also conceded that perhaps if Min.Cwele had looked a bit wider, he might have met many other capable younger people. Again, it would be incorrect for me to suggest he did not otherwise .It also does not make my argument easy that Thuthu is a daughter of the First Family in a country where the majority of 25 year old struggle to even get jobs as interns.However, it would be a sad day if young people were chastised, punished and disadvantaged from ascending to higher public positions because of their age and family associations even when they have educational qualificqtions. Reading through the 200 Young South Africans in the Mail and Guardian today in a country that has Youth in its majority, a young democratic country that is only 20 years young with progressive policies that are pro- youth, I am really pleased to see how young people have excelled in two Decades. Lastly, Government experience is overrated.There is a lot of deadwood in Government who have 15- 30 years experience.They cant move because they cant adapt to a new way of doing things as a result they become an obstacle to Progress. Perhaps were it not for the fact that Thuthu is a Zuma, which muddies the waters, we could have a sober dialogue about how the Nation really perceives the role of young professionals in our Democracy. As a former Minister of State Security, I hope that Minister Cwele applied his mind and weighed the reputational risks of this appointment.I am for youth talent, I am for nurturing such talent to take us forward, the challenges facing the country need new ideas and agility, Experience in most instances has been used to block people and bar those with brains from contributing to the good of Society. Inde Le Ndlela as I wish Thuthu well in her new responsibility as a young woman in a field that is very politically sensitive.
