I am thinking a bit about how much of the Hugo ballot is currently available for anyone to read for free, because it was published originally in free-to-read online magazines. And on the one hand, I wonder if Id published _The Stars Change_ in an online magazine, rather than for purchase in print / ebook, whether that might have brought it a broader reader base and a better chance at the Hugo nomination. Almost certainly. Ah well. Its an interesting consideration for a writer, though, of course, there are still very few options for publishing novellas online, so it may have been an academic decision for my own story. Even if Id tried to get one of those spots, no guarantee I would have snagged one. But its all particularly interesting to me, given that when we started Strange Horizons, it was our magazine, along with Eileen Gunns Infinite Matrix and Ellen Datlows Omni -- that was it for online SF/F. Thats all there was. And so many people told us that if we didnt charge readers for short fiction, wed a) crash and burn, and/or b) destroy the field. Thankfully, Strange Horizons in particular, and the field overall, seem to be surviving just fine. :-)
