I am tired of seeing people on Facebook and elsewhere respond to facts about the Israeli government’s massacre of innocent human beings by swiftly trying to redirect attention to other atrocities being committed in the world. Just because people are being slaughtered and oppressed all over the world does not mean the Israeli government is also free to engage in such atrocities without criticism, particularly since it is supported by billions of our American tax dollars. I am also tired of seeing people constantly trying to justify Israel’s atrocities on the basis of personal attacks, rather than on an understanding of international human rights law and historical context. If you want to defend the Israeli government’s actions, you better be equipped to defend your position with actual evidence and historical analysis from a reputable source (i.e. one that is not linked to the Israeli government’s propaganda). Being unable to engage in a conversation about Israel’s indisputable human rights violations without automatically accusing someone of being anti-Jewish and/or a supporter of terrorism is reflective of intellectual cowardice. It is evidence that one is unable to base their position on reason or factual analysis, and so they have to resort to insults that serve to detract from a meaningful discussion.
