I am told We live in the shadow of history, and that, it becomes the shelter of our present. 13 years ago I was a young staffer working on Parliament Hill. Newly married and with a small child I had no idea how our world would change. Since those events on that Tuesday in September, Ive had the privilege of working in Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, and parts in between helping people rebuild their countries, heal divisions, and find new paths forward. Along the way Ive lost friends and colleagues. Ive seen the horror of war and witnessed the triumphant resiliency of the human spirit. Despite the continued conflict many of my friends are still striving towards building a better democratic system in their own countries. We too have changed. We live in the false comfort of increased security, failing to engage the complex social and political factors that precipitated the events of that morning. Today is a day of thoughtful reflection for me. I went to Iraq naively hoping to help the people of the country build a more democratic society. Today however, I pray that my two boys (5 and 10 years of age) dont inherit the wars we could not end and the work we left undone.
