I am told that this Letter to the Editor was published in the Corning Leader on Sunday, Nov 23rd: To the Editor: I wish to inquire why there has been a news blackout on the non-violent war going on in Schuyler County concerning the dangerous Crestwood project happening on the southwestern edge of Seneca Lake? There are a growing number of good citizens from the Finger Lakes region standing up to Crestwood and their local political shills. To Sheriff Yessman: I have always had the utmost respect for you and your deputies. I saddens me to see that you were on public media blaming “We Are Seneca Lake Movement” for having a resident of Schuyler County die because the deputy who came to arrest our team did not turn around and make the emergency call to the person in medical distress. Please teach your deputies to set better priorities. Medical emergencies take precedence over doing the dirty work for corporate greed. We dont mind being on the lowest rung of the ladder in your priorities. To Town Justice Berry: Stop being intimidated by the political powers in Schuyler County. You do not need to give maximum fines or maximum sentences for trespass. It is your courtroom. You can be as lenient as your heart allows you to be. You are a good person. Act the part. To Town Justice Norman: I had never met you until November 12th. You spent 2 minutes to recuse yourself from passing judgment on two of our group because you work for Texas-based Crestwood whom our direct action is against. Then you rudely indicated to me that I would appear in your court on November 26th (the evening before Thanksgiving) to hear you recuse yourself again so I would have to appear in Justice Berrys court on December 3rd. This judgment was given after you had recused yourself because of your day job. If this is justice, I wish to know in what country it would be recognized as such? To the Town Council of Reading: Shame on you! After the Dryden decision by the highest court in N.Y.State, home rule is here to stay. You could use your own Land Use Law and your zoning regulations to send Crestwood packing. No excuses now. They can not sue you successfully in New York State. The people of Reading deserve a town board who will protect them from harm, and you obviously will not do that. To the Schuyler County Legislature: Shame on you! You are the only county legislature that has said yes to the Crestwood trespass on Seneca Lake. Even the village council of Watkins Glen had the courage to say No. To the people of Gas-free Seneca and “We Are Seneca Lake”: I am so proud to be a part of this movement. Lets kick it up a notch and make sure we are willing to plead “Not Guilty” and if found guilty anyway, if it is at all possible, lets fill their jails and cost them enough that it is painful. The town of Reading council is laughing all the way to the bank when we pay the fines which are set at the maximum. When we go to jail, it costs the county a significant amount of money which I know they did not budget. Nelson Mandela and Martin Luther King, Jr. did jail time. They blazed the path. We need to honor it. To The Citizens of the Finger Lakes: Please stand up and be counted! Protect our lakes! Join hands with us and make sure that the fossil fuel corporations and their political shills know that we are the community for a livable Planet Earth and yes indeed, we shall overcome. Ruth S.
