I am trapped on a roller coaster. Now and then there is exhilarating air time, but mostly it is one downhill plunge after another. Days and dreams merge. Pain is the constant. Acupuncture helps, so do oils and salves. Pat is thinking of getting a pharmacists license since she dispenses so many pills. Today is more in focus than most. Words come. Thats reassuring. Still, you might think what kind of life does he have? A pretty good one. Pat reads ever single post on my Facebook news feed to me. She shows me the pictures. I may not want to get out of bed, I may not be able to face visitors, but my imagination remains vivid. I travel a lot, I go to parties and plays and out to eat. I cuddle babies and dogs and marvel at how kids are growing. I am able to share in peoples lives, celebrate their joys, mourn their losses. I have time to pray, and I do. My prayer list requires a notebook. On good days, I sit on the patio. I study the plants, listen to the wind in the palms, read a novel or the books written by friends like Gerry Hitt and Kenneth LaFave. So many minister to me: Suzanne Condie Lamberts, Ron Mays and Joe Marshalls posts make me laugh, Courtney Weirs observations on her life make me think, the paintings of Brenda Edwards, the poetry of Chris Danowski and Raymond King Shurtz and the photography of Molly Lorincz, Michael Ging and Tim Koors bring beauty into my day. My spiritual life grows from reading the posts of people as diverse as Ardell Nyberg Day, Maria Amorocho Weisbrod, John Simonson, Kathy Cano-Murillo and John Hyland. When I can, I work on my theater history website. In 30 years, I grew deep roots in the Valleys theater community. Now, I am nourished by the artists and their lives. And I am delighted to make acquaintances of those stage folks who are long gone. We have a lot to be proud of here. So, pain? Yep, theres no getting away from it. But it cannot rob me of the happiness that comes my way every day. I am content.
