I am trying out this line of thought and hoping for some feed back on it. Im also wondering if anyone has come across an argument like this before. My thesis: If God, as popularly conceived by those following the Abrahamic faiths, were to actually exist then there would not be any need for organized religion. Were dealing here with the notion of an actually existent all powerful, all knowing, all benevolent, all creating, transcendent, immutable,... That Guy. If He were actually existent it seems that He would not need organized, institutionalized interpreters telling people how He wants them to behave and think. What need would God have of priests, imams, shamans, rabbis, televangelists, faith healers or any of similar ilk? It seems fair to say also that there would be no need of intercessory prayer as He would already know about what is happening and what should best be done. The dude is supposedly timeless, all knowing, uber wise and omni-benevolent. He would already know what is best for any and all of us and would even know what were thinking or wanting even before we would. It seems also fair to suggest that there would be no need for the theatricality of ceremony and ritual that presently surrounds religionist worship practices. Seems obvious that all that theatrical production is not performed for His benefit. All that song and dance and genuflecting and eyes up or head on the prayer mat or candle burning is meant to impress others who need impressing because His Awesomeness surely would not need to be entertained or be in need of all that marketing spin. If we keep on thinking about this, it seems only reasonable to suggest that He would not have any need for anyone to be praising Him and reassuring him constantly that He is wonderful and magnificent. Ive only ever been able to roll my eyes at such a nonsense notion. To expect His Wonderfulness to want or need such praise is to actually insult whatever sensibilities He might posses. The implication is that He has an extremely fragile Ego. The hypothesized God in question would also not require the capitalized male gender pronoun nor would it likely be a male full of insecurities like the juvenile, jealous, insecure, petty, misogynistic, control freakin, anthropomorphized character we see presented in some wildly popular works of fiction otherwise known as sacred texts. The all too human characteristics of this supposed divine being show us clearly that human fingerprints are all over this fantasy sci-fi creation of our tribal, insecure, misogynistic, early neolithic male ancestors. What need would such a divine being have of religion? If there were really any chance that such an omni-being were really existent then all of the foolishness that we see in religion would be unnecessary because an actually existent divine being could easily make itself known and could speak for itself and it would not have a need to be jerking humanity around. Conclusion: The existence and persistence of organized religion is evidence that God does not exist. Gasp!... Unless?? No...!? Could organized religion actually be a proof of some malevolent divine being? That theory could explain a lot too.
