I am very glad that our president gave a heart-felt response to the shooting of yet another unarmed black man in this country. I respect it. But I am also thinking back a year or so ago to Trevon Martin, and a similar sentiment by the president...and the lack of federal action thus far, on what is a far too common event in our country. No matter what corner of this country you are from, you have heard the tale, and seen the video perhaps, of police officers beating...or in this recent case, shooting...an African-American man beyond what is either necessary or legal. 50 years ago, in 1964, there was Freedom Summer. Hundreds, if not thousands of conscientious students and individuals flooded the South to fight a very entrenched, and also very obvious oppression. In that fight, many people were bloodied. Many feared for their imminent demise, as mere teenagers. Some died for that cause. And it was that tipping point, of those who were murdered while pursuing equality, that set in motion a federal investigation, and later, federal legislation, to attempt to right that egregious wrong. Yes, those days are behind us...but we have yet to reach that promised land that a man who KNEW he would someday give his own life to that cause envisioned for us all. We arent there yet, not by a long shot. Ironically, it is the very embodiment of MLKs dream, Barack Obama, who seems to be quite timid in speaking the real truth of the reality that still exists throughout this country, and who seems to be shy of seeking very real remedies for it and that are well within his powers. There NEEDS to be a Department of Justice investigation that spans coast to coast, about police profiling, and brutality...of not only blacks, but of countless innocent people. If not now, then when, and by whom? $.02
