I am very happy to know that journalist VP Ramachandran has turned 90. I was a cub reporter when I met him in the early seventies. He was at that time with the UNI. One of the most influential journalists in New Delhi, he was harassed by the management during the Emergency. He was transferred to Ranchi, which was not even a state capital, in the hope that he would quit. But he accepted the challenge and did pioneering industrial reporting from the land of Heavy Engineering Corporation (HEC) and Western Coalfields. He was earlier with PTI and represented the agency in Pakistan. He was the first to report the imposition of military rule in the country. He later became editor of Mathrubhoomi, a mass circulation Malayalam daily. Today he leads a retired life in Kochi. I plan to meet him when I visit Kochi next. Meanwhile, I wish VPR, as he was known, many many happy returns of the day.
