I am very sorry to see that some of you are worried about having to pass every required question in an exam paper in order to pass a unit and I understand your concerns. However, I would like to explain why this is the case and offer you some reassurance. ABE qualifications are recognised by the UK regulatory body Ofqual, which is a mark of their quality. To be awarded this status, which many employers and universities seek, our qualifications must comply with Ofqual’s rules. The necessity for students to meet all learning outcomes in a unit is one such rule stipulated by Ofqual for ALL UK awarding bodies (not just ABE). Ofqual has recently re-enforced this requirement and ABE’s adherence to it has helped ensure the quality of our qualifications. Other organisations have not been as honest with their students, and indeed, some have lost their treasured Ofqual approval. You can take pride when you receive your ABE certificate knowing that you have achieved a high quality qualification, and you can prove to employers and universities that you have an in-depth knowledge of all areas of the subject. In order to pass a unit, you simply need to demonstrate achievement of every learning outcome on that unit’s syllabus. In the June 2014 exam session, this meant that you needed to pass all REQUIRED questions on an exam paper, but NOT necessarily every single question written on the paper. We would like to reassure you that we are conscious of the difficulties this causes and ABE will endeavour to minimise the impact on its students. Our examiners adopt a positive approach to marking and actively look for evidence in your answers that demonstrates your achievement of each learning outcome. ABE is keen to ensure that all its students pass their exams and achieve their desired qualifications. You may think that ABE doesn’t mind if students fail, as they have to retake an exam and pay another exam entry fee. This is simply not true. We would like all of our students to pass first time! Low pass rates result in unhappiness, as expressed on this page, for both ABE and its students. Please be assured that we are committed to helping every single one of you pass your exams. Those of you who plan to take further exams with ABE will be encouraged to learn that, having listened to feedback from students and centres, we are redesigning all our syllabuses (without changing the course content). From December 2014, all units will have fewer learning outcomes. This means that exam papers will offer more than one question per learning outcome, allowing you a better opportunity to show how you have achieved each learning outcome as your result will not be dependent upon the answer to a single question. As usual, the June 2014 exam results will be published during August. My ABE colleagues and I wish you all every success with both your exam results and future studies. Yours sincerely Ian Fraser Director of Marketing and Business Development
