I am writing a short story about a Patient Attendant who suddenly realizes - about halfway through his shift - that his charge is quite dead. It is clearly stated in policy that the hospital staff must be notified immediately of any change in the patients condition - and death would likely qualify as such. It is generally considered as a rather dramatic change - very conclusively. This does not please our man because he is being laid off the following day and requires only 3 hours to be eligible for Employment Insurance Benefits. His desperate attempt to maintain the illusion that his patient is still very much alive, for at least three more hours, makes for a wickedly funny story. :) My recently acquired job will likely be more short-lived than the fictional patient. ;)
