I am writing this on an all-night flight to Paris, attempting to sleep and failing. Much thought is rattling around my brain, and an inability to turn off. I have just asked for a camomile tea, which usually send me out. Personally I find it difficult to turn off, as my brain always seems to be pinballing from one thought or concept to another. Just as I also find that if I am perplexed about something I tend to try to search for solutions. There are moments when I so want to slam the door on so much of life, and simply flee to some geographic place labelled ‘nowhere’. But I also know that one of the great truisms of travel is: though you can run to the ends of the earth the fact remains that your problems will continue to travel with you. We are what has happened to us, just as we are also the sum total of our dilemmas and ongoing disquiets. You can flee but you can’t hide from the dark stuff that takes up so much space in your psyche. And the only way you can begin to free yourself from its grip is to engage in the business of change. Otherwise it will continue to haunt you everywhere.
