I apologize for coming out of the way and discouraging an organized event; however, I felt like it is necessary. A walkout at this point in time is anything but ideal. Walkouts can be effective; however, they can be equally detrimental. The problems that the walkout 2 years ago caused are not being taken into consideration in this event. Many of those that lead that walkout are now speaking against it. 1. The timing of this walkout could not be worse. It is near exams-period and missing a day of school a week due to rotating strikes is already harsh. This is only amplified by the partial-lockout. 2. YOU ARE STEALING YOUR PEERS chance to learn. When classes are low in number because students walk out, as in the last walkout, most teachers do not teach new material, or are unable to review important materials. You are stealing a day of school from kids that want to learn and are ready to learn. The teachers there are ready to teach that day. WHY STRIKE ON THAT DAY? STRIKE ON A DAY THAT THEY ARENT READY TO TEACH/LEARN. THERE ARE ROTATING STRIKES EACH WEEK. 3. There is no systematic check to determine whether students are actually going to participate in the event. Last walkout, although there were no studies, it was evident that majority of students that walked out, did not participate. There was plenty of coverage that students went hom, did not come to school because they felt it would be a waste, and went shopping/to a restaurant. 4. THERE ARE ALTERNATIVES WE DIDNT USE! Students that are attending this havent bothered to go to events that are scheduled on weekends or on strike days. Think about it? To put this into perspective, a country that feels highly alienated from a bordering nation first uses diplomatic reasoning, economic sanctions, and then if necessary force. If the country immediately invaded, the international community would respond and push that country out. IF WE DO THIS WITHOUT TRYING ALTERNATIVES FIRST, WE ARE HURTING OURSELVES. This will only add on the provincial governments argument that teachers deserve lower wages and the public will see it more as public funds being wasted when students arent using the days of education provided to them. 5. The event is hypocritical. You want students to attend walkout of class on a day that students have to in order to get a better education. WE SHOULD BE SHOWING THAT WE VALUE OUR EDUCATION BY NOT MISSING IT AND RALLYING TOGETHER ON A DAY WE DONT HAVE SCHOOL!
