I apologize for the long delay, last 24 hours have been challenging for Spencer and my family. Spencers Orthopedic doctor came in to do more tests on Spencers reflexes/feeling from his belly button down and the outlook is unfortunately grim compared to what we have all been praying for. Spencer has roughly a 2% chance of walking independently again, so what does this mean? This means that Spencer will be in a wheelchair. As, you can imagine this was hard to hear from the doctors last night, however I think what brought more tears was when Spencer realized that its a strong possibility that he will never walk again. Many of you have left encouraging words on this page for Spencer, please continue this tread as Spencer moves into Rehab, weve read him all your messages and kind words, and brought tears to his eyes. He said that he never realized how much support (outside of our family) he truly has. It is possible that Spencer might be in Rehab as early as Friday, we will keep everyone updated so that when you come to visit him you will know where to find him. In Rehab, Spencer will be working with a team of different therapist, including physical therapy to build strength and work on range of motion as well as occupational therapy to work on every day things like how to get himself dressed, do his own hygiene tasks and other things we might not thing about like how do you go to the movies in a wheelchair, or in the community and get around. the Orthopedic doctor said average Rehab is 6-8 weeks, but each case is different depending on the person. She also went on to inform us that Spencer is almost in front of the game, because of how physical fit he was prior to the accident. The Orthopedic doctor said that even though Spencer has this Spinal Cord Injury, he can still live on his own, drive a car, do as much if not more than he did before the accident just in a different way. My parents met with 2 local Rehab centers that they are looking into sending Spencer too, they said tonight that they are leaning towards St. Lukes Rehab Center. They said on top of being a great Rehab center, Spencer will still be local to continue to have the support of his friends and family during Rehab. which is going to very important. Talked with my dad about an hour ago and he said that he started seeing true signs of Spencer and his spunky spirit again, and he told Spencer it was nice to see him again. And in the picture, that is a true and typical smile from Spencer. Spencer did another day of Physical Therapy today and he made it 6 minutes sitting up on the side of his bed before he started to feel light headed, that is a HUGE improvement from yesterday. God, I am so proud of him!! Dad said that the PT gals has him laughing and acting like my little brother again. Have you ever really listened to the words of The Impossible by Joe Nichols? (Thank you for pointing it out Kristin) Read them or watch the video: An then there was my junior year, Billy had a brand new car. It was late, the road was wet, I guess the curve was just too sharp. I walked away without a scratch. They brought the helicopter in. Billy couldnt feel his legs. They said hed never walk again. But Billy said he would an his mom and daddy prayed, An the day we graduated, he stood up to say: Unsinkable ships sink. Unbreakable walls break. Sometimes the things you think would never happen, Happen just like that. Unbendable steel bends. If the fury of the wind is unstoppable, Ive learned to never underestimate, The impossible. So even though theyre saying walking is unlikely, I will continue to tell my brother, dont under estimate the impossible. #carverstrong -Bailey youtu.be/ce-pUKsJM6w
