I appreciate Dereks opinion here, but for a city that hosts one of the states two major utilities, it is more ideological than helpful. Acccording to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, in 2013 Michigan used coal for 54 percent of its net electricity generation. I look at how the environmentalists waged war on nuclear energy (which now provides 28 percent of Michigans energy), and I wonder: How does a state with our ragged economy get from reality (our present portfolio) to vision (what Derek and others advocate)? It is possible, I am sure. But my suspicion is that it, along with other pressures, will bankrupt the state with sharply higher energy bills. Nuclear would help a great deal toward a vision of the future, but do I see environmentalists jumping on that bandwagon? No, nada, nil.
