I asked her yesterday, (trying to listen intently to her words & not be distracted by her beautifully wrapped up head, & the way her hand made jumby bead necklace glistened against her incredibly dark skin) HOW did she deal with the bush fires this year? She who planted so much, loved more than most, the soil, the animals, the green? She said, I found my self running up up up the hill one day when I saw the fire, grabbing heavy water, the first aid kit & my heart in my hands. I was angry & anxious & I had no idea how I would out it, but I was going. My chest was pounding, hurting bad. I made it half way then I sat down. Still. Because I cant do it alone you know. I have shared these concerns in Switzerland, in America, right here. They put me on a committee once, me & an activist from Grenada. We drafted all our ideas, excellent, workable ones where the community would be involved, educated & empowered. And we presented them. After 2 years, ignoring us & our recommendations, we were replaced. Time for someone else to get a pay out to say they set up a committee & it is being seen too, & all our reports sat there unheeded.
