I asked the Universe to give me the experience of seeing the famous Hawaiian Monk Seal. Even just one time, I’d be very happy. But the Universe gave me more than what I asked for- not just once, but for all 3 dives! Did you know that the Hawaiian monk seal is one of the most endangered marine mammals in the world, and the rarest seal or sea lion in US waters? YES! The Hawaiian monk seal is one of the two remaining monk seal species. The other is the Mediterranean monk seal and the third monk seal species--the Caribbean monk seal- is extinct. The ancient Hawaiian name was llio holo I ka uaua, which means dog that runs in rough water. Hawaiian monk seals weigh between 375-450 pounds (170-205 kg) and 7-7.5 feet (2.1-2.3 m) in length. Females are slightly larger than males, and pups are 35 pounds (16 kg) at birth and 3 feet (1 m) long. They can live between 25-30 years. Interesting isn’t it? As for me, I love that this guy resembles my pug Benoit! I’ve never seen a monk seal up close. As soon as I saw this guy find his spot in the sea bed, I swam closer and I took my time to look into his chubby face. This guy gave me a chance to get closer to him, and I accepted it with respect and gratefulness.
