…I attended the FNM rally the other night - it was good to casually mingle and meet supporters …a few of the speakers were exceptional and others just read. …I left however feeling a sense of political fatigue though …for me, and notwithstanding my support for the FNM party, so much time is spent in Bahamian politics in cat fights and passing the blame around for failed negations, lack of transparency, confirming and denying rumors and dishing dirt! …all of this while the country goes to hell in a hand basket …shouldnt we be debating policy? …education reform? …tax reform? …crime eradication? …export of natural resources …collective health care? …effect social programs and reform? …Bahamian expansion and ownership? …small business growth?…should these forums take on less of personal attacks (of which I am also guilty) and more of (again) policy advance? …what is the 20 year plan for the FNM, DNA or PLP? …how do we, the electorate, monitor the performance of our government against the mandate presented during and after the campaigns for re/election? My thinking is that our politicians have the easiest jobs in the country - many become millionaires on ordinary salaries, the people who they represent are only too happy to see them on constituency walk-abouts, the occasional mothers/fathers/Christmas/Thanksgiving Day cards suffice but where is the meat? …why are constituency offices acting as employment agencies during election season only to be overrun by weeds months? …my thinking is that the entire culture of performance and transparency (Freedom of Information Act) and financial disclosure MUST find itself at the center of all government business ….sure rallies get the troops riled up and excited but my question lingers - excited for what? …the time has come for a complete overhaul in the way we do political business in The Bahamas methinks.
