I attended the funeral of a very good man today, and I was honoured to have been asked to speak on behalf of all the lads who were fortunate enough to have worn the same jersey as him and especially those who wore it at the same time.These are the words I wrote for Archie. Ive been trying to write a eulogy For a man who meant a lot to me And I have found that it is tough To find the words which express enough, The feelings that I wish to impart The feelings which come from the heart. But I kept on trying until I Found the words to say why So many people have made their way To be here on this sad day. A POEM FOR ARCHIE. I wrote these words for you our friend We never know when we’ll reach the end I was asked to come up and say How glad we all are that you passed our way, And that all of us fortunate to have been On a rugby field with you, and to have seen The magical way you mesmerised Not just the opponents, but our side. With that trade mark dummy and side step Many memories of which we have kept On board with us as we’ve sailed life’s sea Never thinking we’d one day be Standing here saying goodbye To a wonderfully real , and nice guy. A friend to all, a gentleman Who put himself last, As only the kind can, Who lived his life selflessly Making sure he could be The best husband to Nellie the love of his life From teenage sweetheart , to darling wife. Then for his boys he strove to be the best dad That anyone could ever hope to have had He brought them training and when we’d all done He took them in the farmer’s field for fun, Running up the hill to the top He never seemed to need to stop. So from his life there is much to gather From the lad his lads called “father”. For all you young ‘uns who want to be Good at rugby, love, or chemistry There is no easy way to be the best You need to work a lot, and sometimes rest You need to give love before you receive, Think of Archie, and believe. So from all of us who knew this gentleman We’d like to say, as best we can How good it is to know our paths met With the sole winner of the League of Gentlemen, yet! Tom Higgins 14/01/2015
