I avoid using the word talented these days. Ive come to realize that most people arent talented. Sure, some may have a slight natural aptitude for a particular ability - but when you look or hear or taste or touch someones incredible work, be it art or dance or cooking or music or a hundred other things, that isnt /talent/. Thats hours and hours of /skill/. They werent born with the ability to do that - they started with nothing but a desire to learn, and spent hundreds of hours building their skill level, dozens of weeks of stressing over projects or competitions, and countless tears over moments of failure. They paid instructors to help them or struggled on their own to learn. They pushed themselves to the edge of sanity for every dance step theyve mastered, every brush stroke they can lay down with precision, every music note they can play sweetly. All so you could look at them and cheapen their hard work by saying, Wow! I wish I was that talented! Because what youre really saying is, The only reason I cant do that is because I wasnt born with that ability - not because I havent worked as hard as you have.
