I awoke this morning to silence. As I stepped into the thick air, I heard nothing. The blanket of fog and dew had covered the earth. And like a colicky baby fighting against much needed rest, she succumbed to the wave of sleep. And I heard nothing. The earth had ceased its groaning if only for a moment. The burden of commerce, trade and industry had slowed to nothing allowing her some respite. And like a beautiful sleeping baby, I heard nothing but slow steady breathing. Drops of dew gathered on a leaf pulled by gravity, running downward gathering more drops until they freefall to the earth. I hear the occasional splash here on the grass, there in the bush and now on my shoulder. I revel in the silence of this sleeping earth. I cannot hear God, but I know He is there. I feel Him right beside me, He also enjoying the moment. I marvel at how good this silence is and how seldom if ever I see it. And I honor Him by standing still and straining to listen. Silence is not to be shunned, but embraced. For in it, the groanings of the earth and our own tortured souls become quiet, and we can hear the voice of God.
