I believe, as a nonparticipant in the battlefield of men vs women, that I have sufficient diplomatic immunity to occasionally smile at nice ladies and offer the occasional compliment, as well. To this end, after being impressed by the large and elegant lady with a tweed hat parked at an exquisitely rakish angle in the seed store today, I made a small noise, then said, Excuse me, maam, but if you will pardon me speaking out of turn, I hope you wont mind my saying that I adore your deportment. She pursed her lips ever-so-slightly, gave me a slow, detailed look from head to toe, and said I dont mind at all. What a literary compliment! And THAT, dear hearts, is a lady with deportment. If shed had a feather or a small brush in her hat, I think Id have fainted.
