I believe in all sorts of weird and wonderful things, something very beautiful almost spiritual happened to me today, whilst walking along the fish cannery walk (American River) I heard Glossy Black Cockatoos, some were feeding and then further away I could see a chick down very low with mum and dad a little higher watching it, I got myself into a well hidden area where I could see what was going on, mum and dad were taking it in turns flying down trying to teach it to fly, was beautiful to see, the chick was quite uncoordinated, giving it a few goes then climbing back up again, I watched this for a while, on the last attempt the chick didnt come up and was making a very distressed call, mum and dad flew down to check it out, it had become tangled in bridle creeper to the point it could barely move they tried to help it but couldnt, so I went into action took my top off and put it over the chick and started to untangle it, it was badly tangled around one of the wings, I managed to release it and put it backup in the tree, I moved away and mum and dad both flew down to check on the chick all reunited and happy, would hate to think of what could have been if I wasnt there, the beautiful thing is I believe I had a helper, a dear friend of mine who used to do the Glossy Black cockatoo program as a volunteer with Brian, Lyn and myself (erecting nesting boxes, tin around trees, banding and recording data with chicks, monitoring nests) who sadly passed away about 10 years ago would have been celebrating his birthday today, I think he led me in the right direction ;)
