I believe we are here to take care of each other, and to lessen suffering in the world. There are those who say that the Word of God is law, and that the exercise of human free will lies in whether one obeys or defies these laws. But all divinely revealed scripture is revealed through language, which is imperfect, which is mutable, which shifts in translation; and laws are formulated by fallible men. And thus it seems to me that perhaps the Word of God is a test for us: whether we are going to import our own prejudices into scriptural readings, whether we will abuse these texts to harm and oppress others. Because this too is an exercise of free will: whether we are capable of the most merciful and the most compassionate interpretations of the Word of God.
