I blame arrogance. Whenever someone accidentally/negligently - TopicsExpress

I blame arrogance. Whenever someone accidentally/negligently shoots themselves, another person, the cat or the TV, they violated several seminal and simple safety rules. Did they treat the gun as if it were loaded? Nope. Did they control the muzzle? Nope. Did they keep their finger off the trigger until sights were on the target and they were ready to shoot? Nope. Simple rules. Easily understood. I believe that someplace along the way people get too comfortable with the gun. Too confident in their supremacy as a gun guy. They get arrogant. Basics and basically reality no longer applies to them. If you look for it, its easy to spot. Its when someone says, Its ok, I was... when I was in the..., on the... Please explain to me how those sounds you made with your mouth are going to change the reality of that piece of lead leaving the barrel of that gun at 850 feet per second or more. They wont and they never will. Its observed when instructors use real guns instead of investing in a $40 blue/red plastic model of their gun. You are a professional yet you wont spend the money on the absolute certainty you dont kill a student? No youre not. Its observed when instructors allow anyone to stand next to a target being shot. I suspect a strong correlation between instructors teaching advanced techniques and safety violations. The more tacticool the more likely the safety violation. Too many advanced techniques involve a compromise of fundamentals. Combat accuracy is a compromise of fundamentals. Advocated by people who dont understand how great of a shooter fundamentals produce if you practice. Advanced techniques have a strong correlation with needless complicating factors. I will predict safety violations when someone disparages or dismisses basic fundamentals since disparaging fundamentals is a clear sign of arrogance.
