I bodysurfed Newport Beachs THE WEDGE once, years ago. (I believe it has been reconstructed since then.) Have you seen the cartoons where a character paddling a canoe or rowboat on a river begins to wonder what the strange new sound is? Realizing there is a waterfall directly ahead, they try to paddle backwards as fast as they can, and end up trying to sprint away on top of the water? (To no avail, of course.) That was my experience at the Wedge. I caught a nice wave, and when it was about to break, I looked down from what I guessed was about eight feet up. To my tremendous dismay, I saw nothing below me except sand. Uh oh, I astutely proclaimed to myself. I believe this wave is going to drive me vertically into the sand down there until my head is two feet beneath the surface. It tried to. When I realized I was still alive, I was trying to figure how to tell if my neck was broken. Being able to walk seemed to be a good indicator. I slowly made my way up the sand towards my towel. In my mind, I was strutting with the strong, sure strides of a real veteran of the Wedge. To this day, I wont even order a Wedge of iceberg lettuce. latimes/local/lanow/la-me-ln-surfers-bodysurfers-battle-over-newport-beachs-wedge-20131020,0,583328.story
