I broke bread with a girlfriend recently who is on the Women, - TopicsExpress

I broke bread with a girlfriend recently who is on the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program. Shes a part-time adjunct professor at Seattle University (undergrad) and she makes $15,000 a year teaching while working on her PhD. A Jesuit university that advocates social justice, its currently fighting a union vote which would (potentially) provide more job security and better wages, because thats just a little too much social justice I suppose. Or maybe only other people should practice social justice? Her stories about having to take time off work to go to two meetings a month in order to receive $40 worth of grocery vouchers, waiting in endless lines, getting applications denied, and getting her benefits cut if she starts feeding her baby formula, should make you mad. Paternalistic and arcane policies are still prevalent here in our progressive blue state. With more and more schools relying heavily on their non-tenured and poorly paid faculty to deliver instruction, and tuition rates steadily increasing, Im scratching my head with wonder as to where all the money is going.
