I call it the Erin Brockovich affect. If you are a school employee you are comparatively Erin Brockovich. You know the students. Where they live, their dogs name, who their parents are, their medical and emotional needs, if they need help, need food, clothing. You will give up your break to drive to their house and pick them up because they missed the bus, have no car, and it is the Halloween party at school today. You will give them your sack lunch, buy them coats and shoes and pray for them every day. You will put up with their smart mouths or angry outbursts because you know the source of their real frustration. You hold them in tornado alarms, drill them in fire safety, hold their hair when they are puking and will give your life to to protect them if anyone dares to put them in danger. You daily contemplate the real fall out if you just punched the abusive parent in the face that you have called DHS on three times. You go above and beyond in every aspect of your job because these are children and they deserve that. They move on and some will forget you but you know you did all you could. You continue to pray and try and touch base but you have a whole new set of baby ducks and they need your attention now. So it goes.......the life of a school employee. Like no other. We thought our board knew that. Maybe they need to spend some time with us. They are responsible for the whole student body you would think the Erin Brockovich affect would touch them also. Then again, she was defending the well being of children over the greed of money.....
