I came across this way back in 1978, and I think its one of the Secrets of the Universe ...its pertinent to the difficult situation Progressives/Occupiers, and other Ner Do Wells, run into in dealing with trying to change lame Conservatives and wimpy Liberals -- i.e, The Status Quo. “People exist on a spectrum from the most redundant to the most flexible. The latter, unless they are thoroughly trained in psychodynamics, are always at a disadvantage to the former in social interactions. The redundant do not change their script; the flexible continually keep changing, trying to find a way of relating constructively. Eventually, the flexible ones find the ‘proper’ gambit, and communication, of a sort, is possible. They are now on the set created by the redundant person, and they act out his or her script. The steady exponential growth of bureaucracy is not due to Parkinsons Law alone. The State, by making itself ever more redundant, incorporates more people into its set and forces them to follow its script.” -----> The above quote is from “Illuminatus!” Part II, The Golden Apple. Written by Robert Shea and Robert Anton Wilson. Page 227-228 of the Dell paperback edition, Second printing 1977. Copyright 1975. (In the context of the trilogy, the quote is read aloud from, “Never Whistle While Youre Pissing,” by Hagbard Celine.) redundant adj.: 1. verbosity or unnecessary repetition in expressing ideas; prolix. 2. being in excess. 3. --- 4. superabundance or superfluidity, lush. Syn: 1. wordy, verbose, repetitive. 2. excessive; useless; superfluous, tautologous. [Per Random House Dictionary.] Also: In excess of what is needed; superfluous, wordy. -----> Cf., The pervasive and unconsciously assumed messages of Advertising and the Mass Media.
